We cannot prove he borrowed ideas from patent applications crossing his desk, but the access was there, the expertise was required, the timing was perfect, and the convenience is staggering. A thorough cross-reference of electromagnetic patent applications filed in Bern, and in other Swiss offices with potential inter-office mail access, between 1902 and 1905 might prove illuminating.

By 1905, with impeccable timing right after Lorentz completed his work in 1904, Einstein's name was on special relativity, built entirely on Lorentz's transformations, which were built on Heaviside's vandalism.

Einstein's Manufactured Ascension

From there, Albert's irresistible ascension unfolded with suspicious precision. He published his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, conveniently, just one year after Lorentz completed his electron theory. That same year came his paper on the photoelectric effect.

Some of the faces are truly a poem, and that is an understatement. Those old photographs of Einstein with Planck, Bohr, Heisenberg, the Solvay Conference. Some are stiff, awkward, forced smiles that do not reach the eyes. Others show Einstein front and centre while the real giants look uncomfortable, resentful, resigned. This was an era predating the science of body language, when people did not perform for cameras the way we do now. They did not know how to fake it well. Their faces and postures reveal what their words could not say.

By 1914, this second class patent officer nobody had heard of a decade earlier had been brought to Berlin by Max Planck and Walther Nernst on terms no German academic could have expected: a salaried chair in the Prussian Academy of Sciences, a professorship at the university with no teaching obligations, and three years later the directorship of the newly founded Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics. Brown then supplied the generator for the first electric chair, and William Kemmler took eight minutes to die at Auburn in 1890 while the witnesses were sick on the floor. A man was tortured to death as an advertisement. Edison: greedy, ruthless knucklehead, just a merchant of other people's inventions and patents. A suitable epitaph.

Wardenclyffe: The Tower That Threatened Everything

If Colorado Springs proved the concept, Wardenclyffe Tower was designed to lead civilisation towards utopia. Tesla's plan was not just wireless communication. It was unlimited free energy for the entire planet, extracted from the cosmic reservoir Maxwell had mathematically described and made freely available to anyone with a simple receiver.

This was Maxwell's vision made real. No more coal. No more steam engines. No more centralised electric power generation and distribution. Just free energy, everywhere, for everyone, forever. The technological liberation of humanity from artificial scarcity.

J. P. Morgan initially funded the project, believing Tesla was building a wireless telegraph to compete with Marconi, another scientific fraud, as Marconi stole a dozen Tesla patents to build his radio, funded by Tesla's eternal nemesis, Thomas Edison. The father of radio is undoubtedly Nikola Tesla, as the US Supreme Court found on 21 June 1943, six months after Tesla died, striking down Marconi's four circuit patent as anticipated by prior art. Understandably, from John Pierpont's point of view, Tesla had taken $150,000 of 1901 investor money, something close to six million in today's terms, and put most of it into the ground, digging a massive shaft and pouring untold tons of concrete and steel rebar, because it was crucial that the tower be firmly anchored to the Earth's crust. Morgan had funded a telegraph mast. What he was actually paying for was an electrode driven into the planet.

Wardenclyffe did not fall to a government demolition order, whatever the New York papers said at the time about German submarines using it as a landmark. It fell to a hotel bill. Tesla had mortgaged the property twice to George C. Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria, to cover his living expenses, and when the debt was called in the courts ordered the tower dismantled and sold for scrap. In 1917 a wrecking contractor took down the most ambitious structure of the twentieth century so that a hotel could recover twenty thousand dollars. The property itself went in foreclosure in 1922. There is no better illustration of what the age valued: the man who built an electrode into the crust of the Earth was billed for his room, and the room won.

Tesla had a photographic memory and a serious problem handling money. He had absolutely no concept of monetary value and became a millionaire several times over before dying destitute, alone, and sick. The only ones who remembered him at the end were the FBI and probably German Nazi intelligence services, both interested in obtaining his Death Ray secrets.

The seizure came within hours. On 8 January 1943 the estate was taken under the seal of the Office of Alien Property Custodian and removed to the Manhattan Storage and Warehouse Company, a remarkable act given that Tesla had been a US citizen for over five decades. The Bureau had pressed for it. The papers were examined on the eighth and ninth of January by Dr John G. Trump, professor of electrical engineering at MIT and technical aide to the National Defense Research Committee, who reported that he had found nothing of practical value, only speculation and philosophy. Dr Trump was the uncle of Donald J. Trump, US President 45 and 47, and we can only wonder what off the record bedside stories he may have told the future White House resident.

Here is the part that matters. The Bureau's own inventory recorded some eighty trunks. When a US court declared his nephew Sava Kosanović the rightful heir and the estate was finally released to Belgrade in 1952, sixty arrived. They are in the Nikola Tesla Museum today. Twenty are not accounted for, along with a black notebook of several hundred pages that Kosanović knew his uncle kept, some of it marked Government. Nobody needed to burn the archive. They only needed to keep the part that worked.

Tesla became a national hero in Serbia, and his death was declared a period of national mourning, even under Nazi occupation and with King Peter II living in exile.

Returning to his halcyon days when the press, bankers, and high society celebrated his inventions that fit acceptable paradigms, such as the AC motor and polyphase power system, Tesla was systematically marginalised once his research approached the revolutionary capabilities Maxwell's original equations had described.
