Commentaries on Aristotle. Born in Cordoba in 1126, when al-Andalus was the intellectual centre of Europe and the West was reading Aristotle in his translation or not at all. Without him, no Renaissance, no Enlightenment, no modern West. Reason and faith are not enemies.

Lumbre is living firelight, not the cold lux of the Latin. The Toledo translators wanted a word with warmth in it, and Castilian gave them one.

Alfonsine Psalter, Toledo, where Arab, Jewish and Christian scholars worked side by side. The only moment in Western history when three civilisations translated together.

Bookmark found in her breviary after her death, Avila, 1582. Four lines. The most compressed statement of equanimity in the Spanish mystical tradition. Absolute fearlessness.

De l'Infinito, Universo e Mondi, 1584, burned at the Campo de' Fiori, Rome, on 17 February 1600, for saying so. Direct ancestor of the Source Field framework. The Church has never formally rehabilitated him.
